Laramie County Emergency Management On Cheyenne NWS Changes
The Director Of Cheyenne/Laramie County Emergency Management says her organization has made plans to deal with the closure of an overnight shift at the Cheyenne National Weather Service Office.
Jeanine West gave Townsquare Media the following statement:
''I spoke with their leadership yesterday about it. They will be closing the Cheyenne Office from 1am to 7am however, all calls will be transferred automatically to the Riverton Office during those hours. Should be seamless for our responders or 911 calling in. The regular reporting we receive for special events will not have any interruptions and if there is a severe weather emergency the Cheyenne Office will remain open for the duration of the event even if it goes beyond 1am; that is a rare rare occasion. Also, I have their cell phones numbers, so I have no issues calling them at home if I need someone local in an emergency.''
Cheyenne Meteorologist Calls It "A Concern"
But Cheyenne based meteorologist Don Day Jr expressed concern:''certainly it is a concern, especially during severe weather season which is starting now.''
Day is the founder and president of Dayweather Inc. In Cheyenne.
According to USA Today, over 550 of the National Weather Service's 4,800 employees were let go, chose to retire or accepted incentives to leave following President Trump's directive to federal agencies to downsize
