Cheyenne Woman Accused of Stealing Pickup, Altering Plates

A 39-year-old Cheyenne woman is facing a felony charge after Laramie County Sheriff's deputies say they caught her with a stolen pickup.

Animal Control Assist Leads to Stolen Pickup

According to a booking sheet, deputies were dispatched to Amber Marie Nelson's home in the 3600 block of Rawlins Street at about 9:08 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 31 to assist Animal Control, and noticed a white Ram 1500 with license plates where the tags didn't match.

A deputy ran the VIN, and the pickup came back as stolen.

When the deputy contacted Nelson, she reportedly told him that she'd had the pickup for a "couple of months," and that her friend Carlos Salazar lent it to her.

But an NCIC check confirmed the pickup as stolen out of South Dakota.

Nelson Charged With a Felony, 2 Misdemeanors

Nelson was arrested and subsequently charged with felony theft, a crime punishable by up to 10 years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, or both, and obscured license plates and altering a license plate, both misdemeanors.

Nelson made her initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Sept. 3, during which her bond was set at $1,500 cash and her preliminary hearing was scheduled for next Thursday, Sept. 12 at 2:30 p.m.
