Cheyenne

Cheyenne, Wyoming is the capital and largest city in the state of Wyoming. The city is located in Laramie County, Wyoming in the southeast corner of the state near the front range of the Rocky Mountains. It is situated at the intersection of Interstates 80 (east-west) and Interstate 25 (north-south)

Founded in 1867 (incorporated August 8, 1867) as the Union Pacific Railroad was building the transcontinental railroad. The railroad bought such quick growth to the city that it was nicknamed "Magic City of the Plains."

In 1867, the United States Army established Fort D.A. Russell near the city, named for Brigadier General David Allen Russell. The fort was renamed Fort Francis E. Warren in 1930 in honor of the first Governor of the State of Wyoming, Francis E. Warren. in 1949 the fort was transformed to the Airforce becoming Francis E. Warren Air Force Base.

Cheyenne has a continental semi-arid climate marked by long, cold, and dry winters. Heavy snow falls often in the spring, but the dry climate means it doesn't stick around long. Chinook winds, blowing downslope from the Rockies, often bring warm periods to the area in the winter. Summer is warm and mild, with the possibility of strong thunderstorms that can bring heavy rain, large hail, and the occasional tornado.

Cheyenne is the home of Cheyenne Frontier Days, a ten-day celebration of western life, held the last full week in July. CFD, or the Daddy of 'em All, is the largest outdoor rodeo in the US. Events include professional bull riding, calf roping, barrel racing, steer wrestling, team roping, bronc riding, steer roping, and bareback riding. The celebration also features concerts, a carnival, parades, pancake breakfasts, displays, and more.

Cheyenne is part of the Laramie County School District #1. There are four high schools (South, East, Central, Triumph). Laramie County Community College (LCCC) is also located in Cheyenne.

Cheyenne features the Greater Cheyenne Greenway system which connects parks and neighborhoods of greater Cheyenne. The city is also near Curt Gowdy State Park, The Medicine Bow-Routt National Forests, and Thunder Basin National Grassland.

Downtown Cheyenne features the historic Union Pacific Depot and the Cheyenne Depot Plaza. Other attractions in Cheyenne include the Botanic Gardens and Aquatic Center.
