Cheyenne Employees Credited with Stopping Email Scam
Cheyenne Mayor Marian Orr is applauding the quick thinking of several city employees for stopping an attempted email scam earlier this week.
Orr says a person claiming to be the city attorney emailed multiple employees directing them to wire funds to an out-of-state bank account to comply with grant deadlines.
The employees realized the emails were a scam because the attorney’s signature block was not included under her name and the emails were not consistent with usual communications from that office.
"We decided to publicize this matter because of the similarity of this scam to one reported recently through the Wyoming State Bar Association," said Orr.
"We wanted to alert businesses and governmental entities to the persistence and creativity of these scammers, who took the time to find out both our city attorney's name and the name of other city employees," Orr added. "It seems no one is immune to such attacks these days."
Luckily, the city's computer system was not hacked and the scammer received no funds. Orr says police are investigating the matter.
