The City of Cheyenne has announced an informational meeting on data centers and local data center development.
That's according to a post on the City of Cheyenne Facebook page.
According to the post, the meeting is slated for Saturday, June 6 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Cheyenne Civic Center. The event is free and you don't need tickets to attend.
According to the post "Representatives from the City of Cheyenne, Cheyenne LEADS, Black Hills Energy, the Board of Public Utilities, and local data centers will be on hand to answer residents’ questions about how data centers are developed and their relation to local planning efforts and utilities."
Data Centers A Hot Button Issue In Cheyenne
Data centers have become a hotly debated topic in Cheyenne and Laramie County. Some estimates claim that centers that are proposed are actually built, the total in the Cheyenne area could reach 70 such centers.
The Cheyenne City Council on Tuesday voted down a proposed one-year moratorium on data centers. But at least one petition drive that calls for a 12-18 month moratorium on the centers to allow for a study of their impacts and possible new regulations is on-going.
Data center supporters maintain questions about water usage, electricity consumption and other concerns are mostly based on false or outdated information. But opponents say there are legitimate questions that need to be answered and worry that regulations governing the facilities are insufficient to deal with explosion in plans for the facilities.
