Cheyenne/Laramie County Closures For Juneteenth Day
Friday, June 19th is Juneteenth Day, which is a federal holiday as well as an official Laramie County and City of Cheyenne Holiday.
That means non-essential federal, Laramie County and City of Cheyenne Offices will be closed. Banks will also be closed, and there will be nor regular mail delivery.
The holiday commemorates the freeing of the last African-American slaves in the United States following the Civil War in 1865. It was designated as a federal holiday in 2021, the first such federal holiday to be declared since Martin Luther King Jr. was added to the list in 1983.
But the state of Wyoming is among 20 states that do not recognize Juneteenth as a paid state holiday, so state offices will operate as usual. A bill to recognize Juneteenth as an official Wyoming holiday was introduced in the Wyoming House in 2023, but died because it didn't meet the deadline for introduction.
