Bicycle riders are everywhere, or so it seems and that when you least expect them. However, bicycle riders have a responsibility to share the road in a safe manner too.  Here are 5 safety tips that bicyclists should know, in order to share the road and get to their destination in a safe manner, according to nhtsa.gov. Take heed and be safe.

  1. Rules Of The Road - It is every bicyclists responsibility to know the rules of the road and to execute them properly. This is both good for your survival and to help drivers know what you're going to do and see you.
  2. Going With The Flow - Follow the flow of traffic as this is the safest way. Use hand signals if you're going to make a move other than going straight.
  3. Be Aware - Always be aware of traffic activity in front, behind and around you.
  4. Be Seen - Reflectors, head lights, reflective clothing like bright greens and oranges are helpful and necessary for your survival on the road. As the old saying goes, "See and be seen." Safety gear typically has reflective tape on them.
  5. Stay On The Bike - Remember the old bike safety videos of the 60's and 70's where the guy flips over the handle bars. Ensure you know your breaking system and as they say in truck driving, "Keep the rubber side down and the shiny side up."

Bike lanes are not always on the road, however it is still a bicyclists responsibility to share the road, obey all traffic laws and execute safety always.
