Woman Charged With Robbery, Aggravated Assault In LCCC Incident
A 23-year-old woman is facing charges of aggravated assault and robbery after allegedly trying to steal a truck at knifepoint at Laramie County Community College in Cheyenne on Wednesday morning.
According to Laramie County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Capt. Linda Gesell, a sheriff's deputy was on patrol a little before 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday when he was told by LCCC security that a woman had threatened someone with a knife and tried to steal her truck. The driver of the truck had gotten out of the vehicle and foiled the theft by taking the keys with her. The victim described the knife, which has not been found, as being about 8 inches long and silver in color.
A perimeter was set up at the college and plainclothes deputies began walking through the campus, trying to find the suspect in the attempted theft.
While that was going on a deputy noticed on his computer that the Cheyenne Police Department had been called to the Walmart on Livingston on a shoplifting call. The suspect in the shoplifting case matched the description of the woman who had tried to steal the truck. The truck's driver was taken to Walmart, where she identified the shoplifting suspect as the person who had tried to steal her truck.
The suspect in both the attempted vehicle theft and the shoplifting was identified as 23-year-old Talia Poafpybitty, who investigators believe had gotten a ride to Walmart from the LCCC campus. Poafpybitty was arrested for robbery and aggravated assault and taken to the Laramie County Detention Center.
It wasn't immediately known whether Cheyenne Police intended to charge Poafpybitty with anything related to the shoplifting report. Gesell said Poafpybitty was also wanted in Oklahoma on a failure to appear warrant on an original charge of being in possession of a stolen vehicle.
Poafpybitty was also bound over to Laramie County District Court earlier this month for allegedly trying to hold up a Cheyenne convenience store by claiming to have a bomb in her bag.
