Despite an overall increase in crashes last year, Cheyenne police did see "considerable declines" in areas where they conducted High Visibility Enforcement (HiVE) traffic safety operations.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says the department conducted 56 HiVE operations in 2018, resulting in 1,658 traffic stops and 1,130 tickets being issued.

"The College Drive corridor, Storey Boulevard corridor and Ridge Road corridor all had reductions in crashes (with percentages) in the twenties," said Malatesta. "Along the Lincolnway corridor we saw reductions of 18 percent."

Citywide, police investigated 1,222 crashes in 2018, slightly more than the 1,148 they investigated in 2017.

"It's not what we expected to see," said Malatesta. "We're going to continue working on traffic enforcement and really try to bring those crash numbers down."
