Cheyenne Woman Accused of Stealing Nearly $25K From VFW Auxiliary
A 58-year-old Cheyenne woman is facing felony charges after reportedly stealing tens of thousands of dollars from a local VFW Auxiliary.
According to a booking sheet, police arrested 58-year-old Cheryl Kay Shannon at the Cheyenne VA Medical Center at 2360 E. Pershing Blvd. at 11:20 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 6.
Investigation Leads to Felony Charges
Police say Shannon's arrest was the result of an investigation into allegations of theft and forgery during her time as treasurer for VFW Auxiliary to Post 1881.
The investigation revealed that between January and September, Shannon withdrew $24,800 using a bank card issued to her for emergency purchases and presented falsified bank statements during quarterly audits to conceal the withdrawals.
Shannon Charged With Theft and Forgery
Shannon was charged with felony theft and felony forgery-making. Each crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, up to a $10,000 fine, or both.
Bond Set at $5K Cash or Surety
Shannon made her initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Tuesday, Dec. 10, during which her bond was set at $5,000 cash or surety and her preliminary hearing was scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 19 at 3 p.m.
