Registration is now open for the Cheyenne Police Department's Citizens Police Academy.

The ten-week academy, which is free and open to the public, begins on August 5 and runs through October 7.

"All it is is just giving people basically an education of what we do here and what an average day at the Cheyenne Police Department looks like," said Officer Dan Long.

The academy will also feature "hands-on" training sessions.

"You'll get to do building searches, you'll get to drive a police car and do some traffic stops on other officers," said Long.  "We have a range day where we go out and shoot the weapons, our bombs guys come and blow things up, it's a good time."

Applicants must be at least 18 years old, agree to a background check and sign a liability waiver. Citizens may apply online at http://www.cheyennepd.org/CPA.

Space is limited to 30 valid applicants.
