With the annual July 4th holiday rapidly approaching, Cheyenne Fire & Rescue officials are reminding city residents that most fireworks are illegal in the city, including on private property.

The only legal fireworks inside city limits are sparklers, smoke devices, and novelty items. City Fire Prevention Chief Byron Mathews also reminds parents that while sparklers are allowed inside city limits, young children handling sparklers need to be closely supervised.

Mathews also says that as recently as 2015, hospital emergency rooms treated 11,900 people for fireworks related injuries. He also says fireworks on average start about 18,500 fires per year, including 1,300 structure fires 300 vehicle fires and three deaths.

Cheyenne Police typically ramp up efforts to catch people using illegal fireworks within city limits around Independence Day, and while the law is widely violated, people caught using illegal fireworks can be fined up to $225 and have their fireworks confiscated.
