The 17th Street project will be officially completed next week with a lighting ceremony planned for June 13, according to a news release from the Cheyenne Downtown Development Authority (DDA).

The new lights start at Warren Avenue and end at Carey Avenue. Laramie County voters approved spending sixth-penny sales tax money on the project in a 2012 special election.

The project is the result of a joint effort between the city, the DDA, AVI engineering, Pole Mountain Electric and the Reiman Corp. The DDA release says the project will help the downtown area by "adding a new sense of place" and giving pedestrians an improved sense of security.

That, in turn, could help boost pedestrian traffic for downtown restaurants and other businesses. The lighting ceremony is planned for 8 p.m. on Tuesday at 17th St. and Central Ave.
