Cause of Fatal Crash Near I-180 Viaduct in Cheyenne Still Unknown

Police are still trying to determine what caused a Cheyenne woman to crash her SUV near the intersection of E. 9th Street and I-180 last Thursday morning.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says 49-year-old Maria Aguilar-Lopez was coming down the Central Avenue viaduct shortly after 7:30 a.m. when she crossed the median -- knocking over a street lamp -- and struck a large tree on the east side of the road.

"Aguilar-Lopez was the only occupant of her vehicle and no other vehicles were involved," said Malatesta.  "(She) sustained serious injuries in the crash and could not be revived."

Malatesta says an accident reconstruction is being performed, which​ accounts for speeds and driver impairment as well as any other factors which could have caused the crash.

He says accident investigations can take several weeks to process.​
