Cell Phone Leads to Suspected Vehicle Thief, Multiple Charges
Police say the witness, who left his cell phone in the vehicle, called his phone and Herrera answered.
Herrera then reportedly asked the witness for the PIN code and hung up.
Police say the witness was able to track his phone to an address near Reed Avenue and West 24th Street, and they saw Herrera walking in the area.
After seeing the cops, Herrera reportedly hid in the backyard at 819 W. 24th St., but he was located and arrested.
When police searched Herrera, they reportedly found a metal straw with suspected fentanyl residue.
Herrera was booked into the Laramie County Detention Center and subsequently charged with felony theft, misdemeanor theft, and misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance in pill or capsule form.
He was seen Monday morning in Laramie County Circuit Court on the charges as well as a warrant for failure to appear on July 16, 2024, on a separate charge of misdemeanor possession of a controlled substance in pill or capsule form.
His total bond was set at $1,500 cash and his preliminary hearing and arraignment were scheduled for July 31, 2024, at 1:30 p.m.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
