Investigators are still trying to find out what caused a grass fire that forced the evacuation of the Winchester Hills area Wednesday evening.

That's according to Laramie County Sheriff's Office spokesman Brandon Warner.

Fire Was Reported Late Thursday Afternoon

In a Thursday afternoon news release, Warner said dispatch started getting calls about a grass fire at 4:25 p.m. on Wednesday with callers reporting a blaze near mile post marker four on interstate 25.

With strong westerly winds blowing through the area, the fire was deemed to be a threat to people and property in the Winchester Hills area, so an evacuation order was issued. Law enforcement went door-to-door warning people of the danger Firefighters from across Laramie County were called in to fight the fire. Despite torching 565 acres and burning right up to yards on the western side of the Winchester Hills subdivision, the only structure that was lost was a greenhouse, according to Warner.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
