When Can Cheyenne Expect Its First Snow?

The season's first snow in Cheyenne can vary from early September (as was evident in 2020) to late November, but it typically occurs before Halloween.

The National Weather Service in Cheyenne says "while a few years have waited until November to bring snow, 89% of years in Cheyenne's 139-year record have seen snow before the end of October."

7PM 10/5 – We're getting to that time of year again where snow becomes increasingly likely. Here's a look at some statistics from the last 30 years concerning the first snowfall of the winter in Cheyenne and Scottsbluff. The date of the first snowfall can vary widely, from early September (most people probably remember the 2020 event!) to late November. While a few years have waited until November to bring snow, 89% of years in Cheyenne's 139-year record have seen snow before the end of October. Scottsbluff's chances are slightly lower, but still 71% of the 103 years in the record have seen snow by the end of October. It's too early to say when this year's first snowfall will occur, but chances are minimal through early next week. We are keeping our eyes on a possible cold front towards the middle of next week.

Last year's first winter storm of the season came on Oct. 12, dropping 1.1 inches of snow at the airport.

As of right now, it looks like only the mountains will see snow, but, as we all know, that could change come next week.

6/215AM: Greetings! Looking at pretty nice weather to continue this weekend, though we could see fairly widespread frost both Saturday and Sunday mornings. Looks like wind will be on the increase beginning Monday, as a low pressure system approaches from the northwest. This low is expected to bring mountain snow to the area above 9000 feet, with a cold rain below for Tuesday. Hunters and hikers, plan on winter weather if visiting the Snowy and Sierra Madre Ranges Tuesday and Wednesday. Strong winds are also possible in our wind prone areas Tuesday and to a lesser extent Wednesday. Stay tuned!
