The Cheyenne Day Of Giving Goes To Help Wyoming Coalition For The Homeless
Unless we or someone we know is homeless, we often don't think much about it. There are many reasons why we should give to help the homeless in our community. The Wyoming Coalition for the Homeless has been helping people in the Cheyenne area since 1990. The group is solely made up of volunteers and allows people to come and grab a snack, take a shower or provide one day housing.
Recently, we spoke with Rachel Bennet, Executive Director for the Wyoming Coalition for the Homeless. In the discussion, we talked about why some people are indeed homeless. Some may think it's because people have done drugs, or they're drunks, or maybe just couldn't put it together.
Ms. Bennet shared that one man came to the shelter because he fell off his roof, while repairing it, and injured himself badly. At the time, the man didn't have health insurance. Therefore, he had to pay for his injuries out of pocket, lost his job and eventually lost his home.
Homelessness touches all of us whether we know it or not. As you donate items for the 10th Annual Cheyenne Day of Giving, know that you are also helping to provide non-perishable food, clothing and even rain jackets, in some cases, to those around us in need.
We are looking forward to seeing you at the Kiwanis House in Lion's Park on Friday, May 8, 2015. Together, we can all make a difference.
