The Cheyenne office of the National Weather Service is predicting as much as 30 inches of snow in mountain areas and eight inches in lower elevations for this weekend.

Sub-zero temperatures are expected by Sunday.

The service posted this statement on its website early Friday:

"A Winter storm system will move across the region beginning later today and continuing through Saturday evening. Snow will fall over the area with the heaviest snow expected across the mountains into far southeast Wyoming. Snow should be lighter north of those areas. Travel will be impacted and may become extremely difficult to impossible! The snow will end early Sunday but then it will be very cold through Monday morning. Stay weather aware as this weekend will be quite active!"
