LCSD#1 Announces Cheyenne Youth Equality Summit

The Cheyenne Youth Equality Summit has been scheduled for August 20 at Cheyenne Central High School, according to a news release from Laramie County School District#1.

According to the release, the event will include lunch and will be available to seventh through 12th-grade students on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Student check-in beings at 7:45 a.m. in the Fieldhouse hallway.

According to the release:

''LCSD1, F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Boys & Girls Club and Youth Alternatives have teamed up to present this opportunity for students to increase their awareness about diversity, culture and challenges that Cheyenne youth face. The goal is to address these community-wide issues in a positive manner and provide youth with tools they can use to affect change.

Prior to the end of last school year, principals solicited a diverse group of secondary students from every triad to serve on the YES event planning committee. During several sessions, students met and discussed issues they believe are important.

Based on topics the students generated, the community planning team has engaged with Challenge Day, a research-based experiential social and emotional learning program, which addresses issues such as harassment, intolerance, racism, sexism and bullying.  Student leaders will kick off the program. School and community members will help lead these group activities. Challenge Day seeks to ignite a shift toward connectedness, empathy and inclusivity.

According to event organizers, the Challenge Day curriculum provides a springboard from which to grow. The goal is to make this an annual event that sparks a conversation about diversity and understanding that is carried throughout the year.
