Laramie County School District#1 has hired Dr. Stephen Newton as the district's new Superintendent.

He has been the acting Superintendent since last August, but his contract to assume the position permanently takes effect on July 1, according to a news release from the district. He signed a contract after the Board of Trustees voted to hire him on Monday night.

Former Superintendent Margaret Crespo resigned from her position on August 4.

Newton was chosen over two other candidates. Dr. Thomas Meyer. who is currently Superintendent of a school district in Iowa, and Michael Hamel, who is Superintendent of Schools at Carbon County School District in Rawlins, Wyoming.

Newton Has An Extensive Background In LCSD#1

Newton was the district's Director of Education from 2015 until he assumed the role of acting superintendent last summer. In that role, he "directed curriculum, instruction, assessment, accreditation, interventions, professional development, athletics/activities, and federal programs" according to the release.

Newton graduated from the University of Wyoming (UW) with a bachelor’s degree in biology. He also holds a master’s degree in education, and educational leadership and a doctorate in education, curriculum and instruction from UW, according to the release.
