How To Inspect Halloween Candy The Right Way In Wyoming
Halloween is one of those times of year, that most kids, really enjoy. Dressing up, Halloween parties, bonfires, and of course trick-or-treating.
Lots of kids would skip the trick-or-treating, as long as they could still get all that tasty candy. Honestly, I'm surprised there aren't more parents that elect to just buy extra Halloween candy and give it to their kids, instead of having to battle the other trick-or-treaters.
In Wyoming, the streets will be packed with kids and parents going house-to-house tonight. Some of those kids will be too excited to wait until they get home to start eating that candy they've worked so hard to acquire. It's very important though, that you have time to go through their cache of candy to make sure it's safe.
In this day and age, you'd sure hope that people wouldn't mess with the candy, but there are people that are just out to ruin other people's fun.
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has offered important 'candy inspection' tips for parents.
- Tell your kids to not accept anything that isn't commercially wrapped
- Inspect commercially wrapped treats for signs of tampering
- unusual appearance
- discolored packaging
- tiny pinholes
- tears in wrappers
- Check labels for possible food allergens
- Don't allow kids with food allergies to eat baked goods
- For young children remove any choking hazards
- gum
- peanuts
- hard candies
- small toys
The FDA also recommends feeding your kids a light meal or snack before heading out trick-or-treating. This will allow it to be a bit easier for them to wait to get into their candy bag until you have time to inspect their candy before eating.
