The City of Laramie's Mosquito Control has announced that it will be applying a granular larvicide in rural areas near Laramie on Tuesday, June 10.

That's according to a news release from the City of Laramie. The application will get underway at daylight.

What Is The Larvicide Being Used?

According to the release: ''The product is a granular form of Bacillus thuringensis israelensis (Bti) that is designed to penetrate heavy grasses and brushy foliage to reach water sources, especially in maturing hay fields, where larvae are present. The application is targeting both nuisance and vector mosquito larva. The product is environmentally friendly and will not harm fish, amphibians, livestock, or other aquatic invertebrates. If weather conditions are not favorable for the application, it will be postponed until weather conditions allow for the application''

Areas scheduled for treatment include the ''Big Laramie River southwest of the City, flooded riparian zones in the Big Laramie flood plain southwest and north of the city, and acreages north and west of the City that are irrigated by the North Canal and the Pioneer Canal.''

The wet weather that has been prevalent in southeast Wyoming over the last month or so is likely to have created pools of water where mosquitoes can breed.

Dog Training Program at the Wyoming Prison

In 2014, the Wyoming Department of Corrections implemented a canine training program to give dogs a chance at a new life (adoption). It's a symbiotic relationship as the prisoners are given the opportunity to give something back to the community. Inmates teach the dogs to sit, stay, walk nicely with a leash, and improve their socialization.
