The Assistant Director of Instruction for Laramie County School District 1 says 'summer learning loss' is a real concern for students.

But Brent Young says there are steps parents can take to minimize the problem, which can occur while students are out of school and away from their  studies. Young says family experiences, such as trips to museums and historic sites and even local parks, can provide learning experiences and spark an interest in learning more about a topic. Young says even family conversations about everyday topics can help expand a student's vocabulary and provide an opportunity for learning.

Meanwhile, the Wyoming Department of Education is offering two free summer online programs to keep students sharp over the summer months. The programs "Find A Book Wyoming'' and the "Summer Math Challenge" are both available at the department of education website. The math challenge gets underway this week, while students can access "Find A Book Wyoming"anytime.
