Cheyenne School District Denies Banning Rainbow Flags
Laramie County School District#1 has issued a statement denying a newspaper report that rainbow flags have been banned in the district.
The Wyoming Tribune Eagle has reported that the flags were banned.
Bur LCSD#1 issued a statement early Friday afternoon saying that while Confederate flags are indeed banned, rainbow flags are not:
"LCSD #1 has not banned rainbow flags as reported by the Wyoming Tribune Eagle on 4-19-2019. The statement issued on 4-18-2019 to all media and school principals specifically stated, “Because of the provocative use of flags, especially under the current controversy at the local junior high, the District will not allow the display of Confederate flags on District property or at District events. Further, the District will review potential policies or regulations regarding the disruptive use of flags and symbols within the District.”
Consistent with this position, District administration reviewed Administrative Regulations related to Chapter VIII – Section 25 (Harassment, Sexual Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying, and Other Forms of Violence). The amended regulation prohibits displaying of symbols that disrupt the educational process or that the District determines creates an environment of fear or intimidation. This, includes, but is not limited to, the Confederate flag and the Swastika. Administrators may take action to limit the display of other symbols deemed to be disruptive in their buildings. The Confederate flag ban follows an incident on Wednesday in which both Confederate and rainbow flags were reportedly displayed at McCormick Junior High School in Cheyenne.
Racist and anti-gay flyers were distributed at the same school roughly three weeks ago.
