Cheyenne police have seen an increase in battery thefts over the last several weeks.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says thieves are targeting deep-cycle batteries from travel trailers.

"People are popping the boxes open on those battery boxes, getting in there, cutting through the battery cables and just stealing the batteries," said Malatesta.

"With the trend that we're seeing, this would be people who are stealing them in order to sell them off," he added.

Malatesta recommends people take the precaution of securing their batteries with a lock or removing them to avoid having them stolen.

"If you see anybody taking batteries or walking down the street with batteries, notify us of that right away and we'll check into it," he said.

"We're hoping to generate some positive leads in order to bring charges," added Malatesta.
