Cheyenne Police Report Counterfeit Bills

A spokesman for the Cheyenne Police Department is warning people to be on the lookout for counterfeit money that has been reported in the area.

Officer Dan Long says investigators aren't certain yet how widespread the problem is locally, but he says merchants and anyone else who takes cash for payment should take an extra moment to look over bills to make sure they aren't bogus.

Long says that while phony $20 bills are the most common, no particular denomination is automatically exempt from fraud.

Long says many of the counterfeit bill that have been reported locally are not of especially high quality and can often be spotted through a quick examination. He says merchants also have special markers that they use to identify phony money, adding the markers will probably reveal the type of counterfeits that have been seen in Cheyenne recently.

Long says anyone who receives a counterfeit should call the Cheyenne Police Department. He says police will turn over the bills to U.S.Treasury Department agents for further investigation,
