If it seems like more Cheyenne schools are being placed on secure perimeter these days, that's because they are.

Police spokesman Officer Kevin Malatesta says the department is making an increased use of secure perimeters at schools, and has implemented 11 so far this school year.

"A secure perimeter is put in place by the CPD or the school as a precaution when there is a disturbance with non-imminent danger in the area," said Malatesta.  "Although students are kept inside, outside access to the building is allowed."

"The protocol is an effective way to prevent an incident near a school from affecting anyone at the school," he added.

Malatesta says secure perimeters are "pretty standard" and "not something to be overly concerned about."
