Cheyenne saw a big jump in car burglaries in May, and they are reminding people to lock their cars.

That's according to a post on the Cheyenne Police Department Facebook page.

According to the post, police investigated 22 auto burglaries last month. That compares to only nine in April and 14 in May of 2025.

Big Increase Seen In Auto Burglaries Last Month

According to the post:

Of the reported cases in May 2026:
• 18 (82%) involved unlocked vehicles.
• 3 (14%) the victim in the report denied leaving the car unlocked; however, there were no signs of forced entry.
• 1 (5%) involved a locked trailer.

Auto burglaries are often a crime of opportunity, and thefts from cars tend to increase when the weather warms up and people are more likely to be out and about at night.

So far the investigation has identified persons of interest, and detectives are following up on leads.

The post includes a map of where the crimes have been happening:

Police offer these tips to prevent auto burglaries:

• Secure valuables: Keep valuables out of sight to avoid attracting attention. Remove personal belongings such as firearms, electronics, and purses.
• Keep doors locked: Always lock your vehicle doors and close your windows, even when parked at home.
• Install Security Cameras: Video evidence can be valuable in these investigations. Install cameras in a location that captures parked vehicles, make sure that they store video recordings, and keep them updated

Anyone with information or surveillance video is being asked to call  the detective bureau at (307) 637-6513.
