The City of Cheyenne has announced plans for a memorial to veterans and first responders to be built in the southeast corner of Lions Park.

That's according to a post on the City of Cheyenne Facebook page. According to the post, the memorial will be known as "Freedom Point." The monument will feature the Soldier's Cross, a well-known battlefield tribute. The cross will be surrounded by by an eight point compass rose, representing the unity of the different branches of the military.

What Will Be Included In The Memorial?

According to the post, the memorial will include the following:

🎖️ The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, which will feature an 80 percent replica of the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, D.C.
🎖️ The Global War on Terror Tribute, which will honor veterans who have served in campaigns related to the War on Terror around the world and will feature a commemorative bronze sculpture;
🎖️ The Desert Storm Memorial, which will include a bronze sculpture to remember those who served in the Gulf War;
🎖️ The Military Branch Plaza, which will include a display of each military branch’s flag and bronze statues honoring each branch;
🎖️ The POW/MIA Headstone Section, a solemn area dedicated to those who were prisoners of war or missing in action; and
🎖️ A tribute to the War at Home, honoring veterans who have died by suicide and remembering those who made it home but carried the weight of war long after the battlefield.

The post goes on to say:

In addition, Freedom Point will include a space for first responders – firefighters, law enforcement officers, and emergency medical technicians. This area will honor those who are the first to arrive and last to leave, running toward danger when others run away.

Right now the project is in the fundraising stage. That is expected to continue into next Spring.
