The Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service says Cheyenne and Laramie could get up to six inches of snow with a winter storm that is expected to hit the area later today.

The agency says higher elevations of the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range mountains could get up to 20 inches.

The agency posted this statement on its website:

Here are the preliminary winter headlines and possible snowfall accumulations for the upcoming winter event beginning late Monday through Tuesday. Snowfall accumulation graphics will be updated once we get closer to the winter event on Monday. Areas that don't have current winter weather headlines may be issued at a later time, including the Nebraska Panhandle and Carbon County. Heavy Snow is expected to develop and persist over the Snowy and Sierra Madre ranges on Monday into Tuesday. A Winter Storm Warning has been issued Monday afternoon until late Tuesday night for the mountains, where snowfall accumulation of 10”-20” can be expected above 9500 feet in elevation, with localized areas up to 2 feet being possible near the mountain peaks. Outside of the mountains, moderate to heavy snow showers are expected to develop along the I-80 corridor late Monday night through Tuesday night. Blowing snow will become an issue by late Tuesday along the I-80 corridor, and could briefly bring visibility reductions along with the gusty winds. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued because of this. We are also watching the possibility for a localized band of heavy snow to push through late Monday night into Tuesday associated with the main cold front. Winter Storm Watches and Winter Weather Advisories have been issued to reflect this. Much colder temperatures will move in behind this front for Tuesday!
