When Is The Typical First Fall Snow In Cheyenne, Laramie?
With fall 2024 officially underway, some people are wondering when we can expect our first fall snow?
We could use the 'after Labor Day" definition of fall, since snow in early to mid September is pretty common.
OK, it's Wyoming. There is almost no time of the year when it hasn't snowed at some time in history.
But what is typical for the fall season?
The Typical First Snow Dates Are Not Far Off
We referred back to an article we did a couple of years ago in regard to Cheyenne. Here is what we found: October 7 is the average first snowfall in Wyoming's Capital City.
That's according to the Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service.
Keep in mind that we are talking about averages here. It's not unusual for Cheyenne to receive it's first snow before today's date {Sept. 23]. And some years it may not happen until Novermber. But that late date is somewhat unusual. 89 percent of the time, Cheyenne has seen it's first fall snow before the end of October. And fairly severe winter storms in October are far from unusual.
So how about Laramie? We put that question to Cheyenne meteorologist Don Day Jr, founder and president of Dayweather Inc. in Cheyenne,
Here was his response: ''Laramie can get snow as early as September, but most years by the 2nd week of October.''
So can we expect snow in the next week or so? Probably not. The Cheyenne Office is predicting summer-like weather for the next few days, with dry conditions and highs in he 70s and 80s into the weekend.
