Cheyenne, Laramie, Rawlins All Shatter Average Temperature Records In March
The warmest March on record was recorded across southeast Wyoming and the Nebraska Panhandle last month.
The warm temperatures are not just a matter of setting records, however. They had the negative impact of melting off snow, contributing to the lowest snowpack on record around southeast Wyoming. That, in turn, is raising concerns about drought conditions and water shortages in the months to come
That's according to the Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service. The agency posted the following on it's Facebook page:
Here's a look at the full summary of statistics for March 2026 across our area! Last month was exceptionally warm, especially in Wyoming where the warmth shattered long standing records. All sites broke the previous record for warmest temperature recorded in March on either 3/21 or 3/25, some by several degrees!
Despite the bone dry second half of the month, precipitation ended near average along the I-80 corridor in southeast Wyoming mainly due to a few good precipitation events during the first third of the month. Precipitation was well below average further north in Wyoming, and in western Nebraska, which lead to worsening drought conditions.
March 2026 will also be remembered for the extreme wind event which occurred on March 12. The 92 mph gust measured in Cheyenne was the strongest gust ever measured at the site!
