Superintendent Extended in Challenged Wyoming School System

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — School trustees in Wyoming have extended the contract of a superintendent in a district where students recently made racist and anti-gay statements.

The one-year extension approved unanimously Monday keeps Boyd Brown in charge of Laramie County School District No. 1 in Cheyenne for at least the next two years.

School board Chairwoman Marguerite Herman says Brown has done “a very good job.”

The Wyoming Tribune Eagle reports the board hired Brown at the end of the 2017-2018 school year. Challenges during Brown’s first year included racist and anti-gay flyers distributed by students at a middle school.

School officials aren’t releasing a report on the incident, saying that would violate federal law. Wyoming news media including The Associated Press have sued to obtain the report under Wyoming’s open records laws.
