Two Laramie County deputies are being credited with saving the life of a 17-year-old inmate who tried to hang himself.

Sheriff's spokeswoman Capt. Linda Gesell says a deputy was conducting a check at the Juvenile Services Center around 7:25 p.m. Saturday when he found the teen unresponsive in his cell.

Gesell says the teen, who had a bed sheet tied around his neck, didn't have a pulse and wasn't breathing.

"The deputy immediately called for help and cut the sheet from around the juvenile's neck," Gesell said in a news release. "A deputy immediately started CPR (and) after approximately five chest compressions the juvenile took a deep breath gasping for air."

Gesell says the teen was taken to Cheyenne Regional Medical Center and checked out before being released back into custody.
