Behind the Gala's Inspiration

This year's event is inspired by Truman Capote's Ball that was held in 1966 at the Plaza Hotel in New York City. You'll recognize Capote's name for such literary works as In Cold Blood and Breakfast at Tiffany's. Capote held his famous black and white themed masquerade ball for 540 guests.

The guests at this glittering bash included the most illustrious of 1960s celebrities, bringing together the likes of European royals and aristocrats to American musicians and film directors. At Capote's party, Frank Sinatra rubbed shoulders with Andy Warhol while princess Luciana Pignatelli chatted up Gloria Vanderbilt. The fantastic affair rightfully earned it the title of The Party of the Century, and there are film and photos to prove it.

Since the 1966 event, many have echoed Capote's theme. Princess Yasmin Aga Khan, daughter of Rita Hayworth and princess of Pakistan, used the theme to raise money for Alzheimer's in 1991. Ina Garten, a TV chef personality hosted a smaller version. Perhaps the closest to Capote's to date was hosted by Christie's Auction House in 2006 at the Rockefeller Center. Christie's ordered everything to Capote's orders, from masks to orchestra.
