Cheyenne Mayor Rick Kaysen says that while he understands many people aren't happy about an increase in city sanitation fees. the fact is the increase was needed.

The city council recently passed an eight percent increase in fees for next year to take effect July 1. Kaysen says that while no one likes such fee increases, something needs to be done about the solid waste transfer station which the mayor says is both outdated and too small for the city's future needs.

Kaysen says the city also needs to do something about the Happy Jack Landfill, which is rapidly running out of room.

While a consultant hired by the city recommended a series of eight percent increases over each of the next five years, it remains to be seen whether the council will approve such rate increases in future years.
