Wyoming High School Activities Association Commissioner Trevor Wilson released information regarding future reductions in extra-curricular funding for activities and athletics at Wyoming’s high schools following the state legislature’s recalibration bill, which introduced a ‘silo’ approach to the state’s block grant funding. It equates to an 8.4 percent cut for school districts statewide.

WHAT EDUCATION FUNDING CHANGES COULD MEAN FOR WYOMING ATHLETICS AND ACTIVITIES

WyoPreps visited with Commissioner Wilson on Tuesday to gain more perspective on how the reduced funding will impact high school athletics and activities in the state. Wilson described the discussions at the WHSAA Spring Board meeting in Casper on April 28. He conferred the impact this could have from his perspective, explained what he’s hearing from member schools and their personnel around the state, and discussed some of the ideas that were part of the news release last Friday that could have a bearing on high school sports and activities in the near future. If you missed the release, we have the story WyoPreps did last Saturday in the link below.

The release has sparked major discussions with Wyoming residents who may not have been aware of the legislation that was passed during the 2026 session. While the 2026-27 school year’s athletics and activities probably won’t be impacted too much, some school districts face some major decisions moving forward. Wilson emphasized that nothing has been determined yet, but discussions will continue with schools around the state to help decide the best solutions for the future.
