When you leave this world, you hope that you've done enough to leave a legacy behind. We've all known that person who left us way too soon, but their name, something they did, or one of their sayings often comes up in conversation.

Author Ray Bradbury wrote this in his 1953 novel "Fahrenheit 451."

Everyone must leave something behind when he dies, my grandfather said. A child or a book or a painting or a house or a wall built or a pair of shoes made. Or a garden planted. Something your hand touches some way so your soul has somewhere to go when you die, and when people look at that tree or that flower you planted, you're there.

In January of 2025, we lost one of those legendary characters who impacted so many people. The guy who, even though he's been gone for more than a year, continues to impact others: Wiley King.

Wiley was a husband, dad, and a rodeo guy who loved hunting, fishing, wrestling, and spending time with his family and a ton of friends. I said a ton of friends, because everyone seemed to be his friend. Whether he had just met you or if he'd known you for years, the word stranger wasn't in his vocabulary. He was always eager to chat or lend a hand if you needed it.

His legacy lives on, and on April 24, 2026, the inaugural Wiley King Memorial Shotgun Shoot at the Casper Skeet Club will ensure he continues to impact others by lending them a hand, as he did many times while he was still with us. The Wiley King Foundation (WK Foundation) was created to help students beginning their college career at Casper College by offering scholarships for students pursuing things that Wiley had a passion for.

The Shotgun shoot on the 24th will be used as a fundraiser to help fund two scholarships at CC, with the potential for the University of Wyoming.

Registration for the Wiley King Memorial Shotgun Shoot is now open.

  • 4-person teams ($800 per team)
  • Lunch will be provided with lots of raffle prizes and giveaways.
  • 12, 20, and 28 gauge shells will be provided (specify gauge on registration sheet)
  • Shooters will need to provide safety shooting glasses and hearing protection.
  • ATV/SIDE by SIDE is allowed for team transportation

All registration fees will be collected on-site on April 24; cash or check is preferred. If you'd like more information or to send in your registration form, contact Savanah King:
