Although it was only in operation for 18 months, from April 1860 to October 1861, the Pony Express had a profound historical impact on the United States, so much so that it's celebrated every year with the National Pony Express Re-Ride.

This year's Re-Ride kicks off Thursday, June 11, in Sacramento, CA, and will wrap up 10 days and nearly 2,000 miles later in St. Joseph, MO, while making stops along the way in Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Colorado, Nebraska, and Kansas.

When the Pony Express was in operation, only Missouri and California were actual states. The others, including Wyoming, were still territorial lands. The Wyoming Territory was second on the list of the number of station stops (43) and total number of miles (489) on the route.

The re-ride schedule indicates that the Wyoming section of the trip is expected to commence early on Monday, June 16, and will continue until crossing the Nebraska state line in the afternoon of Wednesday, June 18.

In the Casper area, there will be several stops that the public is encouraged to attend. You'll have a chance to witness the handing off of the mochila (the leather cover placed on the saddle to carry the mail) and take pictures with and meet the riders.
