Sunday Fire In Near Happy Jack Road Contained To 60 Acres
The Laramie County Fire Authority says a fire in the area of Happy Jack Road and Road 106 on Sunday was contained to roughly 60 acres.
According to a post on the fire authority's Facebook Page Laramie County Fire Districts 1, 3, 4, 5. 6 and 10, F.E. Warren Air Force Base, Cheyenne Fire Rescue and the Wyoming Air National Guard all helped fight the blaze.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. The post quotes Erin Edwards of the fire authority as saying "We observed fire whirls, which is unusual for this time of year." He went on to say "It highlights just how dry conditions are right now.
Drought Means Fire Danger Is Already High
On that note, the post reminds people that the current very dry conditions are increasing the danger even though it's early in the fire season. People are being reminded to avoid anything that could start a fire as well as keeping a defensible area around buildings clear of flammable materials.
Southeast Wyoming, including Laramie County and much of Albany County are considered to be in extreme drought currently. Cheyenne weatherman Don Day Jr. calls the current drought situation 'bad" and says the next few weeks will be "critical" in terms of precipitation.
Day is the founder and president of Dayweather Inc. in Cheyenne.
