Cheyenne Man Gets 15-20 Years for Killing Mother’s Boyfriend

A 26-year-old Cheyenne man who on April 1, 2024, pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the shooting death of his mother's boyfriend will spend the next several years in prison.

Laramie County District Court Judge Robin Cooley on Tuesday sentenced Tyler James Hill to 15 to 20 years in prison for the Aug. 23, 2023 killing of 43-year-old Burns man Ashley Bartel.

Hill was originally charged with second-degree murder but took a plea deal.

According to the Laramie County Sheriff's Office, Hill, who was one of a handful of people living with Bartel at 4572 Teal Ln. in Burns when the shooting occurred there, fatally shot Bartel in the head following an argument over the use of a car and car keys.

Hill then fled in a red Mazda car, but he was spotted on Interstate 80 near Pine Bluffs shortly afterward, stopped at County Road 159 and County Road 210, and taken into custody without further incident.

"We’d like to thank the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigations for their help processing a homicide scene in the 4500 block of Teal Lane and for their help searching for the murder weapon that had been thrown out along I-80," the Sheriff's Office in a Facebook post on Tuesday afternoon said.

Sheriff Brian Kozak awarded each investigator a challenge coin and thanked them in person.
