Stop for No Headlights Leads to Felony Charge for Cheyenne Man
A 30-year-old Cheyenne man is facing charges, including a felony drug possession charge, following a traffic stop in Cheyenne.
According to a booking sheet, Jacob Lawrence Hutchins was arrested at 9:57 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7 after a Wyoming Highway Patrol trooper stopped him on business Interstate 25 for driving without his headlights on.
The trooper says Hutchins didn't have a valid driver's license and wasn't wearing a seat belt.
K-9 Sniff Leads to Felony Amount of Meth
The trooper says a police K-9 was deployed and alerted on the vehicle, and a probable cause search revealed a baggy containing 5.5 grams of suspected methamphetamine.
Multiple tin foil pieces containing melted blue pills consistent with fentanyl were also reportedly found.
The trooper says Hutchins' two passengers said the methamphetamine belonged to Hutchins, and that Hutchins was trying to get them to take the methamphetamine at the beginning of the stop.
Hutchins Charged With 1 Felony, 2 Misdemeanors
Hutchins was subsequently charged with felony possession of methamphetamine and two misdemeanors, one for driving without headlights at night and the other for not having a valid driver's license.
Bond Set at $5K Cash
Hutchins made his initial appearance in Laramie County Circuit Court on Wednesday, Nov. 13, during which his bond was set at $5,000 cash and his preliminary hearing was scheduled for Friday, Nov. 22 at 9:45 a.m.
Please remember that all suspects are presumed to be innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
