A Major Investment: Meta to Build $800M Data Center in Cheyenne

Cheyenne LEADS in a media release on Tuesday announced that Meta, formerly the Facebook company, will build an $800 million, 715,000-square-foot data center in Cheyenne.

Hundreds of Jobs

Cheyenne LEADS says the state-of-the-art facility will support approximately 100 operational jobs and more than 1,000 skilled trade jobs at peak construction.

"There is no doubt about it, this is a win for Wyoming and will strengthen the local economy," said Wyoming Gov. Mark Gordon.

"This announcement is a testament to our business-friendly climate and our commitment to innovation and developing a resilient workforce," Gordon added. "We’re grateful for Meta’s investment and partnership."

"We are thrilled to make Cheyenne our new home and committed to playing a positive role here and investing in the community's long-term vitality," said Brad Davis, director of data center community and economic development at Meta.

"Wyoming stood out as an outstanding location for our newest data center thanks to its great access to infrastructure and energy, deep pool of talent, and amazing community partners," added Davis. "Our thanks go out to all of our partners who have helped get us here."

Millions in Local Tax Revenue

Located on 960 acres in the High Plains Business Park between Clear Creek Parkway and South Greeley Highway, south of College Drive, the project, which was given the code name Project Cosmo, will contribute millions in tax revenue through local property taxes, fees, and other indirect revenue streams.

Meta will work with Black Hills Energy to add new resources to the grid, including renewables, and the campus will also achieve LEED Gold certification once it is operational.

"The announcement that Meta has decided to invest in Cheyenne is exciting," said Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins.

"Meta’s investment will bring great jobs to our community and help build our tax base," Collins added. "This is a great day for Cheyenne and Wyoming."

Cheyenne LEADS, the economic development organization for Cheyenne and Laramie County, began assisting Meta in 2019.

"After having worked with Meta for over five years, we look forward to officially having them in Cheyenne and the State of Wyoming," said Cheyenne LEADS CEO Betsey Hale.

"Meta will provide quality jobs, great benefits, and be a contributing member of the community," added Hale.

Expected to Go Online in 2027

The new facility will be Meta’s 25th data center in the world and is expected to go online in 2027.

Once operational, it will be optimized for Meta’s AI workloads as part of the highly advanced infrastructure that helps bring Meta’s technologies, including Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Threads, to life.

"This project demonstrates how economic development is a marathon, not a sprint," said Josh Dorrell, CEO of the Wyoming Business Council. "Big projects like this take time to come to fruition and require a long-range vision, careful planning, and extensive collaboration."

"The Business Council is happy to support our partners at Cheyenne LEADS and the City of Cheyenne as they help another significant data center find its home in Wyoming, which will have significant impacts locally as well as to other sectors and communities across the state for years to come."
