Cheyenne Records Second Wettest Summer On Record In 2023
While the calendar may say it's still summer, September is climatologically considered to be part of the fall season.
That means the summer of 2023 will officially go into the books as the coolest in Cheyenne since 2014, according to the Cheyenne Office of the National Weather Service.
It's also the second wettest summer in Wyoming's Capitol City since record-keeping began in 1873.
The agency posted the following on its website:
"With the start of September, we have entered into climatological fall! This means we can take a look back at the weather in summer 2023, defined as June through August. In Cheyenne, summer 2023 was a stark contrast to the last few years! The Top 3 hottest summers on record are 2022, 2020, and 2021 (which tied with 2012). This year though, we broke the stubborn heat trend, and ended up averaging slightly cooler than normal! Even though we were only 0.5 degrees below average, it certainly felt cooler in comparison to the last several years. It was after all the coolest summer in Cheyenne since 2014. Even though Cheyenne reached 90F on 15 days in June-August (just about half of the totals in each of 2020-2022), we never managed to exceed 93F. While the temperatures were nothing special this summer, the rainfall will definitely make summer 2023 a memorable one. Cheyenne picked up a whopping 11.02" of rain between June 1 and August 31, which was nearly double the average, and enough to notch the second wettest summer on record (since 1873). Only 1985, which included the historical flood event on August 1, managed to pick up more rainfall in summer than 2023. While 6.06" of rain fell on 8/1/1985, the wettest day this year was "only" 1.38" on 7/20. Luckily, this year's rainfall was much more spread out. Did you enjoy the cooler/wetter summer 2023, or did you miss the hot and dry summers like in 2020-2022?"
