Property crime continues to fall in Cheyenne, according to statistics released by the Cheyenne Police Department Monday.

Officer Kevin Malatesta says the department investigated 74 property crimes in June -- 18 burglaries, 15 thefts from cars, four stolen vehicles and 37 shoplifts -- compared to 82 in May and 95 in April.

"I think that we see the numbers falling because we're taking a multi-faceted approach," said Malatesta.

Police this year have been fully investigating property crimes, mapping crime trends and proactively looking for property crime offenders as part of their goal to reduce the city's property crime rate -- which was 45 percent above the national average last year.

They've also been working with the Laramie County District Attorney's Office to make sure all information is available to the courts as cases are recommended for prosecution.

"As these guys are getting picked up, we're seeing crimes go down," said Malatesta.  "For these types of crimes, it's generally not their first offense."
