Cheyenne Police Urge Passage of Aggravated Eluding Law
Cheyenne police are urging Wyoming lawmakers to pass a bill that would toughen the state's eluding law.
Republican Sen. Tara Nethercott, of Cheyenne, introduced Senate File 127 last week.
Under the bill, a driver commits aggravated fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer if he/she attempts to cause or intentionally or knowingly causes bodily injury or property damage in excess of $5,000.
The felony would be punishable by a fine up to $10,000 and/or imprisonment up to 10 years.
Police spokesman Officer Kevin Malatesta says the department was involved in 54 pursuits last year, 24 of which would have qualified as aggravated eluding had the law been on the books.
