With the holiday shopping season hitting full stride, Cheyenne Police are reminding people of a few simple steps to keep from being victimized by burglars or cyber-thieves.

Officer Dan Long is reminding people to lock their cars and not leave gifts sitting unattended in plain sight. He says it's a good idea to put Christmas gifts in your trunk if you have to leave them in your car for any period of time, and to never leave items in your car overnight.

Long says car burglaries are a common problem in Cheyenne, and more often than not are a crime of opportunity.

Long says you should guard credit card and other personal information closely. Just because you are asked for the information doesn't obligate you to supply it, especially if you are dealing with a person or company you aren't familiar with.

He says the single biggest single thing you can do to protect your money is to check your accounts closely and often.

Long warns that while some criminals may try to steal large amounts of money at once, others will gradually steal smaller amounts from your account over time in the hope of not being noticed, so it's important to go over your account information line-by-line to be safe.
