The Cheyenne Mayor's Youth Council is currently taking applications for the 2016-2017 school year.

That's according to Jan Spires, who is an urban planner with the city and also helps direct the youth council. She says the council is a great opportunity for young people who want to learn more about city government and local issues.

She says it also teaches life skills and working skills and looks great on a college application.

Spires says the council meets at least twice a month and sometimes has other meetings dealing with various projects. Spires says last year the council looked at bullying issues, adding they will tackle suicide prevention in the upcoming school year.

Council members learn to work together as a team and also work one-to-one with Mayor Rick Kaysen and other city officials. She says applications are available at the Urban Planning Office or online.

Applications are due by March 10.
