Cheyenne Mayor To Face 2024 Election Challengers

Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins will apparently face at least two challengers in his 2024 re-election bid.

Until Thursday, Collins was the only candidate to file for the mayor's office. But on Thursday, Buddy Tennant filed to run for the office. In addition, Rick Coppinger, whom Collins defeated in 2020, has told Townsquare Media that he intends to run for mayor this year, although at last report he had not formally filed to run.

Coppinger is scheduled to talk about his campaign on the ''Weekend In Wyoming'' program on AM 650, KGAB, on Saturday, June 1 at noon.

Collins, a former city council member, was elected to his first term as mayor in 2020, defeating Coppinger and incumbent Marian Orr in two rounds of voting

Today (May 31) is the last day for candidates to file for the August 20 primary election, so additional candidates may yet jump into the mayoral race.

Several candidates also have filed to run for the 6 open seats on the city council over the last couple of days. Two seats are open in each of the city's three wards.

Under Wyoming law, Wyoming mayoral and city council races are nonpartisan. The top two vote-getters in the primary election advance to the November General Election. That means that in the case of the two open seats in each city council ward, four candidates will advance to the general election, assuming at least that many are running.
